BBMRI-LPC (Biobanking and Biomolecular Resources Research Infrastructure – Large Prospective Cohorts) is one of the largest biobanking networks in Europe aiming to facilitate scientists’ access to large prospective study sets on human health and disease. Find more information on BBMRI-LPC here.
The BBMRI-LPC cost calculator is a tool that enables biobanks to calculate their biobanking associated costs. This shall help them to determine a price strategy for their samples, data and services. The cost calculator has been designed for population based cohorts and biobanking in clinical studies. It has a modular design and is based on a process-oriented view. That means it takes you through the whole chain from survey/study preparation to delivery of samples and data. First experiences indicated that it takes about an hour to complete if all required information is available at the time of completing the survey.
Please start the calculation with the module “General” and fill all the fields there, as these are required for the calculations later on. All calculations used in the cost calculator are listed under “formula” for your information. You can save the data you enter in the cost calculator by clicking on the green button “save” – which allows you to save the data to a file on your computer - and reload them later on for further calculations or changes. The data you enter do not leave your computer as all calculations are performed locally in your browser - therefore they are kept absolutely confidential.
For cohorts participating in BBMRI-LPC we will collect data on a voluntary basis to evaluate and analyze biobanking costs in Europe. Non BBMRI-LPC biobanks are of course very welcome to join – so if you would like to participate, please contact us at: Contact
Additionally, we feel that costs in biobanking are an important topic that needs to be discussed widely and open to find solutions for sustainable funding of biobanks. Therefore we also plan to provide the possibility to put your data in an open access database that can be viewed by anyone else who has put their data into the database. This can be done anonymously, but we ask you to provide the country, where the biobank is run, as e.g. personnel costs vary a lot between countries and the data will then be more informative for the users.
